Vista Tips and Tricks

Vista Auto Tuning
Not long ago I realized that Vista Auto Tuning slows Internet connection. But it could be easily disabled with the following command:
netsh interface tcp set global autotuning = diabled
To check if Vista Auto Tuning is disabled use the command:
netsh interface tcp show global
"Receive Window Auto-Tuning Level" should appear with the disabled.
TTL value Change in Windows Vista
TTL field from an IP packet looks through how many links the packet could be transmitted. Routers decreases TTL of the packets of data with 1 in each transmission. When TTL reaches 0 IP package is not sent and an ICMP message is sent.
Initial value is set by the system trying to communicate, for example, Windows Vista sets the TTL to 128.
You can change the TTL value in Windows Vista with the command:
netsh interface set global IPv4 TTL = defaultcurhoplimit
or by registers changes:
DefaultTTL
Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet \Services\Tcpip\Parameters
Value type: REG_DWORD
Valid range: 0 - 255
Default: 128
Present by default: NO
Customizing Vista Clock
Clock bar taskuri least Windows has been improved. If you click on it once, you'll see an option to go to Change Date and Time Settings (Adding date and time). Here you have 3 boxes tab.
1. In the Date and Time (Date and Time) can check if your system is set to correct time zone.
2. Additional clocks enables you to add other clocks for different time zones. This can be useful if you have contacts in areas with a different time zone.
3. Internet Time lets you synchronize the clock with a time server online. By default, this is time.windows.com.
System Quick Stop
This is a simple and funny way to end your working day.
You can configure Vista to be do stop the system quickly when you press the button on / off or when you close the lid.
How to do this:
1. Click the Windows Orb - Control Panel (Windows Control Panel)
2. Switch to Classic View
3. Go to Power Options
4. Click 'Choose what the power button does' (Select the operating way: button on / off)
5. Here you can decide what will system do when pressing the on / off or closing the notebook lid.
I do not recommend setting the option to Do Nothing (no action) on closing the lid, as certainly do not want to carry a working notebook in your bag.
Disk Cleanup
Disk Cleanup is one of the applications that have not changed much in Windows Vista. Functionality has remained the same and the interface was changed here and there. There were no additional items added. Like previous versions, Disk Cleanup scans your disks, find files that are not needed and remove them increasing the free space and help your computer run somewhat faster. So, I would like to show you how to work with it and how to save some precious space on your hard disk.
Disk Cleanup is found in Start Menu in Accessories -> System Tools. As an alternative way, you can always use the search box to type in the word "disk". The first result should be the shortcut to Disk Cleanup.
When the application is initiated, you must select the partition you want to clean and then click OK.
Disk Cleanup will scan the selected partition and will calculate how much space can be issued.
After a while, you will see the process results: the total space that can be issued which is then detailed in categories of files that can be removed. Select the categories you want to delete and click OK.
Disk Cleanup will require confirmation. Click on Delete files and erasing process will be initiated.
Wait until you fill the progress bar window appears and Disk Cleanup.
If you are not satisfied with the amount of space that has been issued, go to the More Options tab in Disk Cleanup window. Here, you can remove the most recent System Restore points or you can uninstall some programs that you have in your computer.
By clicking first on the Clean up button, you'll be led to the Programs and Features. There you will find a list of all installed applications. Select the one you want so uninstall, click Uninstall / Change and follow the wizard to uninstall the applications.
